Frances de La Rosa
February 01 1958 - present
Place of Birth:
I explore the genre of Landscape through various visual means. I am interested in what constitutes a landscape, and I alter the position of the sky at the top or bottom of the canvas, shift horizon lines, and add layers upon each other so that little remains as a recognizable reference. A leaf shape, blade of grass, or bare branch may float in a sea of abstract color. I endeavor to fill the canvas with colored “air” in an effort to replicate the atmosphere. I prepare my canvas with an under-painting of a dark, rich brown, which resembles the color of earth. I then apply thousands of strokes of oil paint, slowing building resonance of color and atmospheric space.
