Artist's Biography:
Born in Reinthal, Switzerland in 1962, Pipilotti Rist studied graphic design, photography, and illustration at the Institute of Applied Arts in Vienna from 1982 to 1986. She focused on animation and created stage sets and music videos for local bands. During this time, she also participated in a post-punk all-girl rock group called Les Reines Prochaines, with whom she performed, produced albums, and created some of her earliest musically-driven video works from 1988 to 1994.

Rist began intensively focusing on video art at the School of Design in Basel where she studied from 1986 until 1988. Her work, conceptually and technically resolved, often takes a personal, almost dreamlike, approach to address universal issues surrounding human nature and innocence while also using elements of popular media culture. Creating a sense of voyeurism, desire, and personal fantasy, exposed with popular culture sensitivities, Rist’s relatively feminist works reveal the tension between vulnerability and individual strength.

During the late 1980s and 1990s, Rist exhibited widely with extensive critical acclaim. Her video Ever is All Over, follows a woman walking down the street breaking car windows with a large, tropical flower; her violence arousing an approving nod from a nearby policewoman. This video earned Rist the Premio 2000 at the 1997 Venice Biennial. During the past decade, Rist’s work has become increasingly popular. In 2002, she taught as a visiting professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. She continues working as a video artist, living and working in LA and Zurich.
